Phil Swain
I retired from the United States Navy after a 22 year career achieving the rank of Captain. While in the Navy, assignments ranged from flight operations involving combat in Viet Nam to training and readiness in both domestic and international environments. I traveled extensively during my Navy assignments and my family and I lived in the Philippines for two years. While working in international assignments, I was involved with not only protocol and arranging official calls on international dignitaries, but in providing cultural awareness briefings for the command staff I was assigned to. Additionally, I participated in the business aspects and arrangements for resupply operations for Navy battle groups in a variety of Asian and Indian Ocean ports. I graduated from the Navy Human Resources Management school and worked in Human Resource program development in Washington, D.C. I was selected to attend the Naval War College in Newport, RI in 1987 and earned a Master of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. While at the War College, I also earned a Master of Science Degree in General Management from Salve Regina University. Senior command assignments included directing both an aviation squadron with over 400 personnel and a $10 million budget and a shore command covering 6 states requiring extensive interaction with civilian leaders and agencies. After retirement from the Navy, I flew with United Airlines piloting, the 727, 737, 757, 767, and 747-400 in both domestic and international environments. My last 8 years with United Airlines were involved, almost exclusively, with flying to international destinations in Europe and Asia. Since leaving United Airlines, I have been an adjunct professor for Concordia University, Portland, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and in the MBA program at George Fox teaching Management, Leadership and Human Resources Management and International Business. I also have my own Management consulting practice and fly corporate aircraft. I have accumulated over 14,000 hours of flight time and hold an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) rating with type ratings in multiple commercial and corporate jets. I have been the Chief Pilot for Aurora Aviation Inc. since 2007 and am captain qualified on Aurora’s King Air B-200 with almost 1000 hours as Pilot-in-Command in King Air’s. Married for 40 years, my wife Susan and I have 4 daughters. Susan and I have been attending Cedar Mill Bible Church since we arrived in Oregon in 1988 and have served in Children’s ministries and on the Board of Deacons. My hobby is training and judging hunting dogs, which I have done for over 30 years. I have written several articles on dog training, hunting and related topics which have been published in a number of magazines and journals.
